The Hidden Retreat of Baekdamsa

July 4, 2008

I have been meaning to get here myself, and Shim’s Image of Korea piece stirs up that desire even more after looking at his set today. Amazing work.

Taean’s Blackened Shoreline

May 30, 2008

A painful reminder, but an insightful account nonethless. Im Hun-Jeong’s photo essay is both visually horrifying and most certainly a rude awakening as to how ignorant mankind has become.

Derek Winchester Photography

May 26, 2008

Canadian photographer Derek Winchester needs very little introduction. Based in Suwon, he’s pretty active in the shutterbug community here in Korea. Go check out his work. It’s excellent. I especially like his martial arts set. Derek also contributes monthly to Seoul Selection Magazine.

Shores of Waikiki

May 16, 2008

Skimming through Tracey’s latest set, I was reminded just how much I miss the beach. Soft tones and amazing compositions. Go check ‘em out.

Killer Apps

April 22, 2008

Two great applications I use are Aperture 2.0 and Adobe Lightroom. I read recently that Adobe is releasing an upgraded version of Lightroom. It’s only a beta version but it still looks pretty sweet. There’s a nice little write-up here together with the download.  Be advised that it’s meant to run alongside Lightroom 1.3 and won’t update existing 1.3.1 libraries. Give it a swing. Lightroom rocks. I think the colour renditions are far more accurate that Photoshop. I rarely even use Photoshop anymore.

Tracey Tomtene Photography

April 16, 2008

I have been following Tracey’s work for ages. I love it. Her work has won awards, been published pretty extensively, and graced the walls of several exhibitions. Moody and surreal, it’s amazing. Go check out her stuff at her Flickr site. She’s also a fine travel writer.

신기루 (Shin Gi Ru) Photography

April 15, 2008

Stumbled on this photoblog this afternoon. He really has an eye for the abstract and some of his captures are infused with a strong sense of melancholy that I like.  I threw up some samples below. Be sure to check out the rest of his portfolio.

David Alvarado Photography

April 14, 2008

Some great concert caps David just threw up on his Flickr site. Love the tones. It just so happens he scooped up the D300 and found a little time to gloat about it. And rightfully so. The thing kicks some royal digital ass. He also seems to have quite a nice studio set up in his apartment.

Ungjib Park Photography

April 4, 2008

Found a great site this morning from Korean photographer Ungjib Park. His photography tries to capture the peaceful moments that are represented in the juxtaposing elements of nature and city life. I love the tonal qualities of his work and the sense of melancholy that layers many of his city skyline captures.

Seoul Digital Photography Exhibition

March 31, 2008

Coming up April 10 is Seoul’s International Photo & Industry Imaging Show. I was there last year and it’s a pretty cool venue. It’s a great way to network and maybe score some solid leads with publications. I met a handful of local magazine editors who were on the look out for contributors. Be prepared to battle the crowds though - the digital photography community is growing exponentially and these events are huge magnets, particularly in a city with 12 million people.
